7 Fun Facts About Qatar

Qatar is a sovereign country of Western Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The official name of the country is the State of Qatar, where men outnumber women by 3 to 1. Qatar is among the top 10 leading producers of LNG-Liquified Natural Gas.

1. It is the Richest Country on the Face of Earth

Qatar’s per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is $130, 475, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, Luxembourg, Europe’s number one, stands second on the list with a GDP of $116, 808. The country is geographically smaller than even Yorkshire, but to a wonderous extent, it has the third-largest oil and natural gas reserves. Plus, they have the World’s best airline and building nine new stadiums for the 2022 World Cup. Continuing economic growth has helped to make Qatar one of the World’s wealthiest nations.

2.Al Reem Biosphere Reserve

It is an inhabited area of 120,000 hectares (296,526 acres) in northwest Qatar. The fun fact about this place is that it is a semi-arid desert that is home to gazelles and Arabian oryx. It is one of 24 UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in the Middle East. It was established in 2005 and makes up for approximately 10% OF Qatar’s land area. It was recognized by UNESCO in 2007 as only heritage site of Qatar.

3. Qatar is Second Most Polluted Nation on the Earth

According to World Health Organization (WHO), a concentration of Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 particles in the air determines how polluted a nation is. These particles are produced through combustion, transportation, power plants, factories, etc. Out of 92 countries, Pakistan ranked as number one in producing these pollutants in urban areas with an average of 115.7. Qatar, however, stands on the second place with a PM 2.5 average of 92.4.

4. There is an Array of Museums in Qatar

The “Museum of Islamic Art” is one of its own kind in Doha. It was designed by the late Chinese-American architect I M Pei. This piece of art is the most striking in the whole city although there are numbers of others too.

“Qatar Airways” recently won “The Best Airline of the Year” award for the 5th time which was definitely record-breaking. Qatar Airways have impressed the World by winning four prestigious prizes at 2019 Skytrax World Airline Awards, including the most exceptional pride of ‘World’s Best Airline.’ Hence, it is the only airline in the history that has won this award five times (2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019). Moreover, the Hamad International Airport is the ninth biggest in the World.

Before the discovery of oil and natural gas reserves, Qataris used to earn their living by diving for pearls. Nowadays, a make-believe land, shaped like a string of pearls, is created on top of one of the most famous pearl diving places of the past. It’s called “Drumrolls…The Pearl.”

Great Britain once protected the Qatar state until 1971, when it became independent. In 1994, Crown Prince Khalifa announced freedom of the press and right of women for the vote. Qatar is a land of opportunities for different nationalities alone. It enjoys a diverse Middle Eastern culture. It is one of the most favored tourist destinations in the Emirates.
