How often does your body renew itself?

364

We assume that the body was only new when we were once born but this is not the case. According to different studies, it is concluded that our body renews itself every seven to ten years and most of our body parts are revamped at a rapid pace. Each and every cell of our body is replaced after a period of 7-10 years which means we renew. Our body comprises of 50-75 trillion cells which have a specific lifetime after which they become dead and are replaced by the new cells. Each cell lives its lifetime after which it is replaced. Once we die, some of the cells are still alive until they complete their lifespan.

Before we find out how cells replace themselves, you must know how these cells come to life?

The body makes new cells in various ways. The existing cells in the body divide by a process which is known as mitosis where the parent cell divides to form two cells that are known as daughter cells. The second process through which the cells divide is from the stem cells which are the special cells present in the body. They do not undergo mitosis, but they create new specialized cells such as the nerve cells and the blood cells. For the formation of new cells, the old cells die and control the growth of these cells.

The lifespan of red blood cells is around 4 months, white blood cells are alive for around a year which are the main protectors against the infections, and skin cells have a life span of two-three weeks which constantly protects us against the environment. colon cells die after every 4 days and sperm cells have a life span of three days. The fat cells and the bones are alive for around 9-10 years after which they are replaced. But when we talk about brain cells they are lifetime, they do not replace. But according to recent studies, it is seen that the neurons in the hippocampus area do regenerate which is responsible for boosting memory. Other than that the brain, tooth enamel, eye lens are irreplaceable and they stay with you for a lifetime.

There is no specific thing as a 7-year replacement of new cells but the researchers have assumed this myth as true when they add up the lifespan of each cell. However, in reality, the cells keep on replacing after they complete their lifespan. Other than the cells, the body parts also have a specific life span. The stomach lining, for instance, is regularly covered by the digestive juices and acids which is renewed after a few days. The bones, on the other hand, are renewed after a decade. Other than this there are few body parts that stay attached to you for life till the time you are dead.

So think about it as a beautiful idea where your body replaces the old self and becomes completely new after a period of 7-10 years. However, consider this only as a myth to keep yourself happy and healthy. Eat healthily, sleep well and enjoy life to stay as young and as healthy as you were in your adulthood!
