Sleep deprivation negatively affects your mental as well as physical health which can ruin your focus, concentration, sex life and it can also affect your weight either resulting in weight loss or weight gain. The effects of sleep deprivation include the following:

Lack of sleep can result in heart diseases, heart failure, heart attack, raised blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and others. Sleep deprivation results in depression. According to the recent study, it is seen that people who sleep less than 5-6 hours they likely suffer from depression and anxiety. A study conducted in 2007 showed that people who suffer from sleep disorder i.e. insomnia are more likely at a risk to suffer from depression, in fact, it is seen that insomnia is one of the leading causes of depression and anxiety. Other than the depression, it results in forgetfulness. The researchers found out the sharp-wave ripples result in long term memory formation which usually from during the deep sleep but when you are sleep deprived then these memories do not form.

Sleep deprivation results in an increased aging process where your eyes start becoming puffy and you have a saggy skin with increased formation of wrinkles, dark circles, and fine lines. Sleep deprivation enhances the formation of stress hormones within the body i.e. cortisol leading to the breakdown of essential collagen protein within the skin. Other than the stress hormone, it reduces the formation of growth hormone which is usually formed during the deep sleep so if you are sleeping less than your growth is also halted or slowed down.

Sleep deprivation can lead to weight gain as it enhances your hunger along with your appetite leading to an increased risk of obesity. According to a study, people who sleep less than 5-6 hours a day are at increased risk to suffer from obesity than the people who sleep for 8-9 hours. Sleep has an association with the peptide hormones that regulate your hunger i.e. ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin enhances your hunger while leptin makes you feel full. But these hormones are released during your sleep and lack of sleep results in decreased release of leptin and increased release of ghrelin. Sleep deprivation stimulates your appetite and makes you crave carbohydrate-rich foods or foods which are rich in fats.

Sleep is essential for a human brain and body due to which it is important to sleep well at night at least for 8-9 hours and stay healthy mentally as well as physically throughout the day.
