Why you need to get 8 hours of sleep daily
Sleep is very essential for our health and well-being. It is a vital body process that was previously stated as an inactive period when body and mind shuts down. But this is now contrary to the actual definition of sleep. Various scientists and doctors have made immense researches on sleep and the unique state of mind during the process. It is now clear from all the studies that sleep is an active process that involves many complicated processes within the central nervous system and its network.
WHAT IS SLEEP?
Sleep is an active process as it is a shift in consciousness from normal daily activities. It consists of five phases.
WHY DO WE NEED ADEQUATE SLEEP?
Sleep is very important for the mind and body. Every individual person has different needs of sleeping hours per day. But what remains common in nearly every individual is the constant requirement of a proper resting stage in between a day so that he can pursue the daily chores and tackle daily life work more effectively. The productive use of brain is jeopardized to a great degree if proper required sleep is not fulfilled or ignored for 48 hours or more.
HOW MUCH SLEEP YOU NEED?
The requirement of sleeping hours varies from person to person. Some people may sleep for 4-5 hours a day and still wake up feeling fresh every morning. These people are accustomed to their lifestyle and may not need extra hours of sleep during the rest of the day.
As every human brain is a unique home of complex metabolic processes, the sleep- wake cycle is also unique.
The part of our brain that is thought to supremely control sleep is called ‘hypothalamus’. This part contains several nuclei responsible for essential body processes such as thirst, appetite, fear, anger etc. One of these nuclei controls sleep or ‘Circadian rhythms’.
Proper sleeping time is really important to maintain. Usually night is the most appropriate time set for resting. You will feel more fresh and active if you take complete sleeping hours at night.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INSOMNIA AND SOMNOLENCE:
Insomnia is stated as lack of sleep. When you are not getting the enough sleep that is required according to your age, daily activities and tasks, you are said to be insomniac. Many people go through this condition when they are in highly variable depression states. Stress also triggers insomnia. Stressful stimuli such as emotional disturbance may contribute towards the condition. Excessive use of narcotics like nicotine and tobacco, substance of abuse and CNS stimulants such as tea, caffeine and cocoa can also depress the normal sleep-wake cycle. Some people experience insomnia on regular basis irrespective of any change in climate or environment, irrespective of presence of stressful factors or excitement and anxiousness.
